Notarization basics
Quick answers about what a notary public actually does and what to expect at a NotaryBolt appointment in Arizona.
What does a mobile notary do?
A notary public is a state-commissioned official who verifies the identity of a signer, witnesses the signature, and applies an official seal to the document. A NotaryBolt mobile notary travels to your home, office, hospital, coffee shop, or any other lawful location in their service area and performs the same notarial acts a brick-and-mortar notary would.
Common acts include acknowledgments, jurats, copy certifications, and oaths or affirmations. The notary confirms that you signed the document — they do not vouch for the contents.
What a notary cannot do
An Arizona notary is not allowed to:
- Give legal advice or tell you which document to use.
- Notarize for someone who is not physically present (except via approved remote online notarization).
- Notarize a blank or incomplete document.
- Notarize a document in which the notary has a personal financial interest.
- Translate a document or certify a translation.
- Prepare immigration or court documents unless separately licensed to do so.
If you need legal advice, talk to a licensed Arizona attorney before your appointment.
Does NotaryBolt serve outside Phoenix?
Today we serve the greater Phoenix metro and most of Maricopa County, including Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, and Avondale. When you enter your service address at booking we'll show you which notaries cover that ZIP and the earliest available appointment.
We're expanding to Tucson and other Arizona markets — sign in to be notified.
Before your appointment
Everything to have ready so the appointment takes minutes, not hours.
What ID should I bring?
Arizona law (A.R.S. § 41-311) requires the notary to identify you with current, government-issued photo ID that shows your photograph, signature, and physical description. Acceptable IDs include:
- State-issued driver's license or ID card (any U.S. state)
- U.S. passport or passport card
- U.S. military ID
- Tribal ID with photo and signature
- Foreign passport (with current U.S. visa, if applicable)
The ID must be unexpired (or expired within the last 5 years). The name on the ID must match the name signed on the document. If it doesn't, contact the notary before the appointment so they can advise on credible-witness identification.
Should I sign the document in advance?
No. For most notarial acts (especially jurats) you must sign in the notary's presence. For acknowledgments you can have signed it earlier, but you must still acknowledge in person that the signature is yours. When in doubt, bring it unsigned and sign at the appointment.
Do I need witnesses, and does NotaryBolt provide them?
Most Arizona documents do not require witnesses in addition to the notary. Wills, certain real estate documents, and some out-of-state forms do. Your notary cannot serve as a witness on a document they are notarizing.
When booking, you can request +1 or +2 traveling witnesses for an additional fee. They will arrive with the notary and sign as disinterested adult witnesses.
What if other signers will be at the appointment?
Add the number of additional signers when you book so the per-signature fee is calculated correctly. Every signer needs their own valid photo ID, must be present at the appointment, and must sign in front of the notary.
Preparing your document
How does the NotaryBolt document wizard work?
The wizard asks plain-English questions and turns your answers into a clean PDF you can print and sign at your appointment. Today we support the most-requested forms:
- Minor travel consent letter
- Emergency medical authorization for a minor
- Uploaded documents (we'll review and confirm they're ready)
The wizard saves drafts to your account so you can come back later. Documents are not legal advice — see our Terms.
Can I bring my own document?
Yes. Upload the PDF during booking, or print it and bring it to the appointment. We cannot review documents for legal sufficiency, but we will confirm the document has a place for the notary's certificate (acknowledgment or jurat). If the certificate is missing, the notary can attach a loose-leaf certificate at your request.
Should I print the document, or will the notary bring it?
If you can print, please do — it's faster. If you can't, add the printing add-on at checkout and the notary will bring printed copies to your appointment.
Pricing, payment, and refunds
How much does a mobile notary cost?
Your total breaks down into four parts:
- Notarial fee: $10 per notarial act (set by A.R.S. § 41-316).
- Service fee: the base NotaryBolt service charge shown at checkout.
- Travel fee: based on the service address. Inside the Phoenix metro it's usually flat.
- Add-ons: optional printing or extra signers/witnesses.
You'll see the full total before you pay — there are no hidden charges.
When am I charged?
Payment is collected at booking through Stripe. The notary is paid after the appointment is completed. We do not store your card number.
What's the cancellation and refund policy?
- More than 24 hours before: full refund.
- 2 to 24 hours before: 50% refund.
- Less than 2 hours, or no-show: no refund.
- Notary no-show: 100% refund.
Cancel anytime from your dashboard. Refunds settle to the original card in 5–10 business days.
Do you accept business or escrow accounts?
Yes. Email hi@notarybolt.com for invoicing and net terms for title companies, real estate brokers, and law firms.
At and after the appointment
How long does an appointment take?
Most single-document appointments take 10–15 minutes once the notary arrives. Loan signings and multi-signer packages can take 45–60 minutes.
What if my document is rejected by the recipient?
A notary verifies identity and witnesses signatures — they don't guarantee that a recipient (court, bank, agency) will accept the document. If a notarization is incorrect (wrong certificate type, missing seal, expired commission), contact us within 30 days and we'll re-do the notarization at no charge.
How do I leave feedback for the notary?
After the appointment, you'll receive an email asking you to rate your notary. Ratings help us keep quality high and reward great notaries.
For notaries
How do I sign up to perform notarizations through NotaryBolt?
Apply on the notary application page. You'll need a current Arizona commission, a valid government ID, and proof of E&O insurance. Most applications are reviewed within 2 business days.
How and when do I get paid?
Notaries keep 80% of each booking; NotaryBolt retains a 20% platform fee. Payouts run through Stripe Connect on a weekly schedule. You can track earnings from your notary dashboard.
Can I decline or release a job after I've claimed it?
Yes — use the Release button on the job in your notary dashboard. The job returns to the available pool. Releasing repeatedly close to appointment time can affect your standing on the platform.
